It’s that time of the year again! Kids around the region are dusting off their textbooks, backpacks and uniforms, getting ready for another year of school.
As the schooling term starts up this week, it’s especially important for drivers to be extra vigilant and slow down to 40km/h in school zones.
Everyone in the community needs to do their part when it comes to keeping children safe when they get back to school says Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating of the Road Policing Command.
“We want to remind road users to be aware of road rules and obey the speed limit school zones during signed hours. Children can be unpredictable but by following the road rules and staying alert, you may help prevent a tragedy.”
The start of school also means an increase in traffic and school buses.
Police are asking for all motorists to plan ahead, look out for school buses, allow extra travelling time and to be patient along school zones especially.
“Our Back to School safety message is for motorists to slow down, be extra cautious and be patient whilst travelling in and around school zones,” Commissioner Keating said.
