Fully-Funded NDIS in Maranoa

“A once-in-a-generation landmark reform” is how Federal member for Maranoa David Littleproud has described the Federal Government commitment to fully fund the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) during an impassioned speech to the IN Federal Parliament.David Littleproud 7

During the speech on the floor of the House of Representatives the local member highlighted local stories and experiences as inspiration.

“I would say there is no Australian in this nation who would not be in support of a 0.5% increase in the Medicare levy to support those vulnerable people who we need to protect.”

Mr Littleproud told the House he has spoken with parents, family, friends and carers about their unique story and struggles while caring for someone they love with a disability in a rural region.

“For many rural families, there’s limited supported housing for people with a disability and, when they can’t live with their parents any longer, they’re often forced to move. Often forced to relocate hundreds of kilometres away – away from their community and from everything they’ve ever known – to receive the care they need.”

“Parents have told me, with relieved tears in their eyes, they now see a future for their child under the NDIS – not only under their care but also when they physically can’t look after their child or when parents pass away.”

Mr Littleproud says the NDIS funding move is about standing up and helping those with a disability, our most vulnerable Australians.

“Put the politics aside and stand with us, shoulder to shoulder, walk out of this parliament and say that we have done the right thing.” He told the House.

“Forget the politics, forget the vitriol, this is about real people’s lives.  It is not about the next election.”

Under the government’s plan, outlined in the Federal Budget last week, the NDIS would be funded by a 2.5% Medicare levy (up from 2%) set to raise $8.2 billion over three years from 2018.
