Taking out the trash: Clean Up Australia Day this weekend

The whole country is gearing up to partake in Clean Up Australia Day, and Goondiwindi is no exception.

Gonndiwindi State School is doing their part as kids get ready to clean up the whole campus. Their Clean Up Australia Day event is kicking off at 1:45pm Friday March 4 and no doubt will leave the school grounds in sparkling condition.

The official Clean Up Australia Day is not until Sunday March 6, but schools get in early for the School Clean Up Day. Businesses also had the chance to get involved earlier this week; Tuesday March 1 was their official day.

According to the Clean Up Australia Day website, last year saw an estimated 536,423 volunteers removed 15,915 tonnes of rubbish at 7,232 sites across the country. That’s a whole lot of trash that litters our parks, roads, schools and ends up in our waterways, which in turn have a detrimental effect on our beautiful local wildlife and fish.

Clean Up Australia Day are a  non-government funded, not-for-profit organisation, and rely on the fabulous team of volunteers that donate their time and money every year.

Established in 1990, the organisation celebrated 25 years of keeping our country clean and beautiful back in 2015.
